Bosch BAT181 BlueCore 18-Volt 2.4 Amp Hour NiCad Battery Overview

Bosch re-engineered its popular cordless tool line-up with new BLUECORE Battery Technology. Bosch is so confident that users will get up to 50% longer battery life, that it is offering a two year battery guarantee with ProVantage. BLUECORE Batteries were engineered with internal cooling rods placed between the battery cells to absorb damaging heat. The battery cells stay cooler during operation and charging as compared with standard batteries which heat up quickly, speeding up chemical breakdown and shortening battery life. BLUECORE Batteries can charge in 30 minutes while other batteries take up to 3 hours to charge when hot. And best of all, all BLUECORE Batteries are compatible with current Bosch cordless tools.

How to Find a Free Deep Cycle Battery

Maybe you are looking for a set of deep cycle batteries to replace your old ones. Maybe you want to find a free deep cycle battery to try desulfating it so it is near new and then try to sell it. Some people are even getting a large deep cycle battery and removing all the good cells so they can sell them for renewable energy systems.

18 Volt Batteries

A home renewable energy system using wind or solar needs anywhere from 12 volts to 48 volts. Each cell from a deep cycle battery is about 2 volts, so it takes 6 cells for every 12 volt section. If you were to buy these cells new, then they cost between 0 - 0 each. A small 12 volt 650 amp hour battery setup would cost about ,800 for the forklift battery cells. You could use golf cart batteries at about each and 220 amp hours each. It would take 6 of them to do it and it would cost about 0.

18 Volt Batteries

Here is the kicker, though. A deep cycle battery cell from a fork lift battery lasts about 4 times as long as a golf cart battery. You could refurbish the cells out of the forklift battery and sell them for 0 each. They would easily last twice as long (or more) as the golf cart batteries and you could make a handsome profit for doing it.

My first pair of forklift batteries that I got for free happened to be Yuasa batteries, but all kinds are available. What I discovered is that usually most cells in the battery are still pretty good. Usually it is one or two bad cells. Most places just have their batteries picked up for recycling when the battery doesn't make it though a 8 hour shift. These two batteries to the left had all good cells except 3 of them. There are 12 cells in each (these are 24 volt, 700 amphour), so that gives me 21 good cells.

So, if you're selling these cells, you can make up to ,100 profit. If you keep them for your own use (which is what I did), then you could make 3 banks of 12 volts at 600 amp hours each, or 12 volts at 1800 amp hours total. I say 600 amp hours instead of 700 because even after checking fluid levels and using my homemade desulfator, the amp hour capacity never gets up to brand new levels. But you can usually get 70% to 90% capacity, especially if you remove the bad cells. In the above example, you will use 18 of the cells total, leaving 3 good ones. You will probably have to just recycle those last 3 cells.

To get the batteries free, just call around to anyplace with a warehouse that uses forklifts. The first two in the picture above were picked up at the local post office main hub. You could just go through the yellow pages. Ask if they use electric forklifts, if so, do they plan on replacing their batteries in the near future. If you have a pickup truck, I would stick with the 12 or 24 volt ones. You can tell them that you can take them off their hands for free and that you will sign any environmental forms that they require.

There is another way to get forklift batteries but it costs a little money. Just look in the phone book and find the local forklift company. Almost all of them sell new batteries and deliver them as well. But they will also come and pickup old forklift batteries to recycle. They always have several sitting around. On Vancouver Island in Canada, the local company gets about 3 cents per pound from the local recycler. I can go to the forklift company and pick the best of the used ones and pay by the pound. A 24 volt like the one above weighs about 1,100 pounds or so. I can move those with a engine hoist and my V6 nissan pickup. Any bigger and you need other arrangements. They will also deliver the batteries to my home and plop them wherever I like. At 3 cents a pound, I could pay for the two batteries in the above picture. Then they would charge about per hour for the delivery. Let's say, worse case, it cost 2 hours in labor, that is 6 for both batteries. If I sell individual cells in 12 volt groups, then I could sell 18 of them (3 cells were bad) and make ,800. That gives me ,600 profit. Not bad.

GM Electric Cars

GM was experimenting with electric car conversions as early as the 1960s. The Corvair and Chevette models were converted to electric, but never produced.

18 Volt Batteries

Then in 1987 came a racin in the sun; the solar powered auto race across Australia. The GM sponsored solar powered Sunraycer won. GM followed up with the 1990 Impact electric car. The car was aided in design by techincal experts AC Propulsion and Hughes electronics. The futuristic looking ride was the precursor of the EV1. The car was well ahead of the pack except for its lead acid battery bank.

18 Volt Batteries

1994, GM started up the PrEView program. The program provided 50 custom built Impact EVs for evaluation. 14,000 people applied to be testers. Motor Trend Magazine called the car "Fantastic". A modified Impact hit a world record183mph.

In one of those interesting twists of fate, the Impact was so well received that it influenced the California Air Resources Board to craft the now famous and defunct Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. The ruling specified increasing electric car production quotas from the major auto manufactures from 2% in 1998 to 10% in 2003. Gm appeared at first to be all with the mandate, Chevy S-10 pickup trucks were fitted with electric drive motors.

Then, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan showed their support by producing their own EV prototypes. Ford converted its Ranger pickup trucks to electric, and released the Ford TH!NK EV. Electric car conversions blossomed. EVs were indeed on a roll.

The Impact evolved into the 1996 EV1. The car was a hit from the start. Celebrities drove the car and provided free advertising. We remember the local TV anchorman driving the EV1 on camera while providing a steady stream of positive comments. Production was limited, and the EV1 could not be bought and paid for. The car could only be leased, but the future looked good for the electric car. 288 of the 1996 version with lead acid batteries were leased.

GM at this time was already expressing EV doubts in public. The company viewed the PreView program as a failure, yet continued with EV1 development, along with a promotional ad campaign. The hot-cold attitude of GM did not go unnoticed. Citizens repeatedly demonstrated support for the EV1, spending time and money on what they considered to be correct and well done.

In 1999, major improvements were made to the battery pack and drive electronics. In yet another curious move, the number of leases made available was restricted despite an increase in demand for the leases. GM did not seem to obey rational laws of supply and demand.

Then in a reversal, GM issued a recall for 450 EV1s. There were technical problems with the battery packs. 200 of the cars were re-fitted with Ni-MH battery packs.

In 1999, the EV1 production line was stopped after making some 1100 cars. In 2002, recalls of the EV1 were begun, consumers reacted. There were attempts at negotiation. There were protests. In the end, the cars were re-claimed and stored away in a warehouse. The EV1 program was officially ended in 2003. This is the same year that the CARB ruling regarding was repealed, aided by a phalanx of auto industry and cloaked oil company legal types.

The story ends with the crushing of nearly every single EV1. The efforts against EV1 smashing were many and well documented, as demonstrated in the film "Who Killed the Electric car". Several GM executives have expressed remorse at this outcome.

Fast forward to 2010, GM has done another 180 degree turn. Now the company is planning to produce the Chevy Volt. GM has referred to the Volt as both an electric car, and a range extended electric vehicle (REEV). The strategy is working. People are lining up once again to purchase the latest GM electric powered car. The Volt is technically a Series Hybrid vehicle.

The new GM EV has the largest Hybrid battery pack out there at 16kWh. This Li-Ion pack is as large as the battery pack in some fully electric cars, like the Mitsubishi iMiev.

The car also has an onboard generator, and 4-cylinder gas engine. Unlike many other hybrids (GM included), the Volt engine only powers the generator, which in turn powers the electric drive motor. So, after the 40 mile or so range is extruded from the battery pack, the 4 banger kicks in and provides your extended range. The battery pack is only recharged by plugging it in. This also lends the label of "PHEV", or plug in electric vehicle to the Volt.

GM has a history of producing winning electric cars. Lets hope the company stays the course and avoids anymore turn arounds in the middle of the electric highway.

RV Battery Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of your RV batteries depends on you. How they're used, how well they're maintained, how they're discharged, how they're re-charged, and how they are stored all contribute to a batteries life span. A battery cycle is one complete discharge from 100% down to about 50% and then re-charged back to 100%.

18 Volt Batteries

One important factor to battery life is how deep the battery is cycled each time. If the battery is discharged to 50% everyday it will last twice as long as it would if it's cycled to 80%. Keep this in mind when you consider a battery's amp hour rating. The amp hour rating is really cut in half because you don't want to completely discharge the battery before recharging it. The life expectancy depends on how soon a discharged battery is recharged. The sooner it is recharged the better.

18 Volt Batteries

What does all of this mean to you? That depends on how you use your RV. If most of your camping is done where you're plugged into an electrical source then your main concern is just too properly maintain your deep cycle batteries. But if you really like to get away from it all and you do some serious dry-camping you'll want the highest amp hour capacities you can fit on your RV.

Deep cycle batteries come in all different sizes. Some are designated by group size, like Group 24, 27 and 31. Basically the larger the battery the more amp hours you get. Depending on your needs and the amount of space you have available, there are several options when it comes to batteries. You can use one 12-volt Group 24 deep cycle battery that provides 70 to 85 amp hours or you can use two or more 12-volt batteries wired in parallel. Parallel wiring increases amp hours but not voltage.

If you have the room you can do what a lot of RVers do and switch from the standard 12-volt batteries to two of the larger 6-volt golf cart batteries. These pairs of 6-volt batteries need to be wired in series to produce the required 12-volts. Series wiring increases voltage but not amp hours. If this still doesn't satisfy your requirements you can build larger battery banks using four 6-volt batteries wired in series/parallel that will give you 12-volts and double your AH capacity.

Happy Camping,

Mark

DEWALT DW9116 7.2-Volt to 18-Volt Pod Style 1 Hour Battery Charger Overview

This is an amazing little charger that literally breathes new life into your failing DeWalt batteries. It revitalizes everything from 9.6 volts through the big 18-volters, but what's so great about this charger is that not only can it be used as a standard quick charger, but if you leave a worn-down battery in for four to 10 hours, the charger conditions the battery with a tune-up mode, and at completion, it automatically converts to trickle charge, so you'll never damage a battery by leaving it in the charger too long. Diagnostics with LED indicators give you the battery status at a glance: charged, charging, power line problem, replace pack, and battery too hot or too cold. It's got a small footprint, which is always a plus, and the price is look-twice-and-rub-your-eyes cheap.

Diagnostics with LED indicators give you the battery status at a glance: charged, charging, power line problem, replace pack, and battery too hot or too cold. It's got a small footprint, which is always a plus, and the price is look-twice-and-rub-your-eyes cheap.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

The Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw - A Review

When I first got my hands on the Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw I jumped to a few conclusions. The first, there is no way that a cordless electric pole chainsaw will have the power to chop through the tree limbs I had set up for it. The second, This chainsaw is going to be heavy and uncomfortable. The third thing I thought was that this electric chainsaw will be broken before my review day was over. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with this little guy!

18 Volt Batteries

Lets discuss the power of the Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw. It comes uses a 18 - volt Nicad battery to power the 8 inch cutting bar. I followed the instructions and made sure the battery was fully charged first. Then I took it to work. I had a lot to cut and I was really trying to test the limits of this chainsaw. I got through about 30 limbs that ranged between 1 inch and 3 inches before the battery started showing any signs of letting up. At no point did the saw seem to be strained or working over time. It just kept powering away.

18 Volt Batteries

Now on to the weight of the saw. It can extend to 14 feet and it is listed as weighing 7.6 pounds. The heaviest part is by far the battery which is good because that's usually at the base when you are working with it. The saw did not become flimsy as I expected when it was fully extended. The motor near the top of the saw is not overly heavy and it does not get in the way either. I think the fact that this day was close to 90 degrees made it seem a little heavier to me but yard work is yard work.

The Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw turned out to be a lot more durable that I had originally expected. After it was doing so well with the limbs I was cutting I tried to push it a little. I found a big branch that needed to come down. This was about 4 and a half inches. This was the only time that the saw ran into some trouble. Like I said I was pushing this electric chainsaw to its limits.

Overall, the Black and Decker electric pole chainsaw far exceeded my expectations. The one thing I did not like was feeling a little bit of a lack of control when cutting in fully extended mode. This could have been my fault though. Everything else this saw claims it can do was not fluff at all. If you have a few small to medium sized tree limbs that need pruning this electric chainsaw is the perfect addition to your garage.

How to Replace A Power Wheels 12 Volt Battery

One of the most important parts of your child's Power Wheels toy car is the battery. It powers the car as well as the additional features such as the power lock brake and the FM radio. It makes sure that those features perform well. There are many types of batteries and the Power Wheels comes with a 12 volt battery. This type of battery is rechargeable but after 1 to 3 years of usage, you may need to replace it. When replacing the Power Wheels 12 volt battery, you should follow the instructions given below:

18 Volt Batteries

1. First, check the manual book of your child's Power Wheels. Read the instructions on how to replace the battery. Make sure that you choose a battery type that is compatible with the vehicle. 2. Expose battery compartment by opening the vehicle's hood.

3. Unlock the battery and remove it from the compartment. You should make sure that you place the old unit out of your child's reach. The product contains sulfuric acid which is a hazardous chemical substance.

4. Check the battery connector and make sure that there are no signs of corrosion on it.

5. Check the car's battery compartment. The compartment should be clean and there should be no acid leaks from the old battery.

6. When you have checked the connector and the compartment, now you can pull the battery clamp. After that, place the new battery into the compartment.

7. Plug the new unit to the connector and then close the hood. Charge it for at least 18 hours before using the car for the first time.

8. To prevent acid leak, it is recommended that you put the old battery in a plastic bag.

9. Last but not least, do not dispose the old battery. It is always nice to know that the product is recyclable and you can send it to the nearest Power Wheels authorized service center to be recycled.

As long as you follow the instructions above, replacing the battery of your child's Power Wheels car is very easy, hassle free and safe. You only need to check the compartment, the connector and eventually place the new 12 volt battery into the compartment. When replacing the battery, make sure that your child is nowhere near it.
