Going Green With Used Solar Panels

Going green is not always the least expensive option for a family in today's harsh economic reality. In fact, the most expensive aspect of going solar is in the initial phase of purchasing and installing your panels.

18 Volt Batteries

Still, there are potential ways of saving while going green such as opting for used solar panels, though this option does come with the caveat of being willing to roll up your sleeves. Your best option to reduce the cost is to hire a professional, at least for the installation.

18 Volt Batteries

However, expertise is not a requirement when buying used solar panels, but it helps to have a guideline when making such a purchase. Be aware that technology improves over time and solar panel use is relatively new. In fact, several of the older panels are still in use today. The first thing you will notice is that older panels tend to be larger than newer panels when comparing wattage, but if you have the available space, it will be a lower cost option for going green.

Be sure not to ignore obvious damage, such as cracked glass, and missing or broken connections. Only you can decide your level of skill, and if you are willing to attempt repairs such as soldering then you should be able to repair broken connections using a soldering iron with 2% silver.

The most telling aspect is the output measurement that you receive from your digital meter; be sure to measure in full sunlight. To test used solar panels, measure across the plus and minus terminals of each panel. After setting your meter to measure DC voltage, a 12 volt panel should show about 21 volts in full sunlight. Be mindful that a battery is still necessary to be able to store the solar energy and that will slightly increase the initial cost.

Over the long haul, though, maintaining a solar panel is as simple as wiping down the panels every two weeks to remove debris and there is a bit of additional work required in maintaining the battery. Before final installation, verify that no shadows are cast over the panels and that the unit faces south with the correct tilt angle.

One other aspect of a growing technology is that demand drives the repair and maintenance industry that goes with the technology. Being a handy person does really become necessary based on where you are located.

Remember to investigate the tax subsidies offered by state and federal government for additional savings for your principal residence that might contribute as much as 30% of the cost. Check with your personal tax representative before purchase for a realistic expectation of how much you will have to pay out of pocket, and whether your state offers additional reimbursement.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint - Build a Solar Cell Panel

You could also connect the cells in parallel where the current or amperage add together and the voltage stays the same. This method is not recommended as the voltage is to low to work with and the current becomes large and you loose power at the rate of current squared times resistance. They are very simple and fun to make. You solder a tin coated flat wire onto tinned strips on each side of the solar cells and connect them to the next cell. The method you connect them determines the voltage and amperage. You can make a 12 volt 9 watt solar panel for $18.60 plus taxes, backboard and flex glass or you can make a 12 volt 90 watt solar panel for 3.50 plus taxes, backboard and flex glass.

18 Volt Batteries

Before soldering any leads to the solar cells, I would recommend that you set up a work table outside in full sun and let the cells heat up to at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The cells are quite fragile and may crack if they are cold and you touch them with a hot soldering iron. A good rosin core solder melts at about 374 degree Fahrenheit.

18 Volt Batteries

Check each connection with a voltmeter to make sure you have a good connection between each cell and the next before you glue the cells to the back board. Do not let a tinned wire hang over the edge of the solar cell such that it can touch the tinned wire on the other side of the same cell as this will short out that cell and it will not contribute to power of you solar panel.

If this happens cut the tinned wire back so that it can not touch the other tinned wire or if solder flows over onto the terminal below get some solder wick which is many fine strands of copper wire in a spool. Pull out a short section, place it on the solder and put your soldering iron on the wick and it will pull up any excess solder.

Make two terminals at the edge of the back board to attach the first and last solar cell to and use these terminals to connect to your device that you want to power. Check the voltage and polarity of the solar panel with a volt meter and mark these terminals + plus and - minus as the voltmeter indicates.

The number of solar cells you solder together in series will give you the output voltage you want. You then connect the output leads to what ever device you want to power. You can make any output voltage you want in increments of 0.5 volts Direct Current (DC) and any output current by selecting different sizes of solar cells.

You can also connect the cells in parallel where the current or amperage add together and the voltage stays the same. This method is not recommended as the voltage is too low to work with and the current becomes large and you loose power at the rate of current squared times resistance.

You can make a 12 volt DC solar panel with 28 solar cells. All of these solar cells generate an out put voltage of 0.5 to 0.55 volts. 28 cells connected in series will generate between 14 to 15.4 volts DC. You need at least 2 extra volts to fully charge a 12 volt battery.

Benefits of the Powerful Makita Lithium Line Up

The first time I saw a Makita Lithium at the tool store, I picked it up and just assumed it was a display model and didn't have a battery. It was so light! It had been my experience that you needed a heavy 18 volt tool to do the job. I really like the way the tool felt and then realized, it did have the battery in it and what's more it was an 18 volt!

18 Volt Batteries

There is no question that the Makita Lithium line has really been at the forefront of lithium power tools. Their Makita LXT series continues to be one of the best selling lithium drills in the market.

18 Volt Batteries

Why would you get rid of your old cordless tool and switch to a Makita Lithium tool? Well for starters, who doesn't like shopping for tools? But these new lithium tools offer real benefits for anyone who spends time working with cordless tools. The very first benefit you will notice is the weight. Because the lithium battery is able to hold the same amount of energy in a smaller package, you have a large weigh savings right away. Don't under estimate the value of a lighter weight tool. You may not notice the difference if you drive in two screws and then put it away, but if you use the tool all day, that weight will add to fatigue. Try this, hold a 3 pound tool at arm's length and a 2 pound tool in the other hand at arm's length, you will get the point in a couple of minutes. Now, how many minutes a day do you use that tool?

Lithium tools in general including the Makita Lithium tools have some other benefits. With the ability to hold more energy, you can not only get longer run times, but the run times will be more useful. How so? A typical NiCad battery will start losing power as it starts to lose it's charge. You have probably noticed this if you have been driving a lot of deck screws or lag bolts, you still have juice but the tool is driving slower and may not even have enough power to drive the screw home. This becomes even more evident as your battery packs begin to age. With a lithium battery, the battery will maintain it's power for almost the full charge. All of a sudden, it will stop and it's time to charge, but you maintained full power through the cycle.

Another benefit that the Makita Lithium tool will offer you is the battery itself has more life cycles than you Nicad battery will have. You can check out the various manufactures, I have some numbers that show the batteries having considerably more life cycles (charge up and run down) which is a real plus.

The most common complaint on lithium tools including the Makita Lithium is the cost. I thought the same thing at first, but check again, the price has really started to drop on the lithium tools.

In conclusion, if it is time for you to consider a cordless tool, consider trying a lithium tool. The above mentioned benefits are real and tangible that you can use the first day on the job with a lithium tool.

Hanging Drywall

18 Volt Batteries

If you have ever taken the time to watch a skilled tradesman hang drywall, you marvel at how fast and easy it seems to be for them. I have seen friends in the trade use nothing more than a tape measure and a utility knife to make all the necessary cuts and cut-outs. For the average homeowner who may want to save a few bucks on a home construction project by doing it himself or with a helper, hanging drywall can be very intimidating, especially if you have never done it before. There is real physical labor involved here, especially if you are by yourself. I just remodeled my own bathroom recently which wasn't bad since it was only 8 feet x 8 feet. What about a larger room such as a new family room in the basement? I have good news for you. It can be done by yourself or with a helper with a little patience and instruction.

18 Volt Batteries

The goal of this article is to help those who may be just starting out or who are a novice. It will cover the basics of drywalling. The experienced veterans and tradesman have their own way of doing things and have developed their own techniques, shortcuts and trade secrets. If you are just starting out, I would suggest buying an extra sheet or two of drywall when estimating your job. You will make mistakes and there is no better teacher than experience. If you have a friend who is skilled at drywall, I suggest you by him a case of his favorite beer and have him come over and give you some pointers as you work.

Lets start out by looking at what tools and supplies you will need to complete your job. First thing on the list is the drywall. we need to understand that with drywalling, there is a certain amount of waist involved. We always want to use the largest pieces possible to create the least amount of seams. The less seams there are to tape and spackle the better off you will be and the smoother your walls will look. For instance, if I am building a 10 feet x 10 foott room in my basement, if at all possible I want to purchase 12 foot drywall boards. Sure you lose two feet to waist but imagine how many more seams there would be if you used 8 foot boards. Next we need a good cordless drill/driver along with at least 2 or 3 batteries. I also like to have two chargers so I always have one battery charging and one battery at full charge. My personal preference is an 18 volt cordless drill. Some people prefer 14.4 volt for this project. I have found that a good 18 volt variable speed cordless drill can take care of just about any job around the house, big or small. You can find anything you need in regards to a cordless drill at justcordlessdrills.com. A good supply of magnetic screw gun bits are needed also. With 1/2″ sheetrock, I like to use 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 sheetrock screws. I also like to glue my boards to the studs, especially the ceiling so a couple of tubes of adhesive such as Liquid Nails and a caulking gun is needed. For the beginner, invest in a 4 foot sheetrock square. This tool will prove invaluable in making your cut-outs for electrical boxes, exhaust fans, etc. Other items that you will need are a tape measure, a utility knife, some carpenter's pencils, a hand held drywall saw, a ladder that will be long enough to get you to the ceiling and if you can get one, rent one, or borrow one: a sheetrock lift or jack. This tool is not necessary but will make your job so much easier when doing ceilings. It is especially useful and almost essential if you are alone and have a high ceiling. The last thing that you need to make you job easier is a good set of saw horses to lay you drywall boards on when measuring and making cuts.

Lets assume that your room is studded and all the rough electrical, plumbling and duct work is in place. Your room is ready for drywall. When installing drywall, always start with the ceiling first. This allows the drywall used for your walls to butt up against the perimeter of the ceiling drywall to help support it. Make sure that the perimeter of your ceiling area has enough stud showing to secure drywall all around. If not, you need to install what are called "nailers" around the ceiling perimeter to allow the edges of your ceiling drywall to be secured with drywall screws. A nailer is a board that allows you to attach the drywall board edges when a stud or choice is not present. When doing the ceiling, we need to go perpendicular to the ceiling joists and make sure the ends of the drywall around the ceiling perimeter always land on a ceiling joist or nailer. Also we need to stagger our ceiling joints as much as possible. If you have a 14 foot x 14 foot ceiling and are using 12 foot drywall boards, you are going to need one 12 foot board and a 2 foot piece to cover the 14 foot span. A drywall board is 4 foot wide so when you install the next 14 foot span of drywall, install the 2 foot board first and then the 12 foot board so that the 2 foot boards are on the opposite end from each other. Always make sure that the end of a drywall board that is going to be continued ends in the middle of a joist, stud or nailer.

The first thing that we need to do is take a look at the ceiling and see where any cut-outs need to be made for the lights, exhaust fans, etc. Lets say our first ceiling board has two recessed lights. We need to make two measurements: from the wall on a straight line to the center of the light on the length side of the drywall and from the wall on a straight line to the center of the light on the width side of the drywall. Transfer these measurements on to your drywall board by using your sheet rock square and carpenter's pencil. Where the two measurements intersect will be the center of your recessed light. Now measure the diameter of the recessed light. The diameter is length across the light. Divide the diameter by 2 and use this measurement to draw a circle equal distance from your centerpoint. Use your drywall saw to caught out the circle on the drywall board so when you install the board the cut-out will line up with the recessed light. On both length-wise sides of the drywall board, you will see a slight bevel. Make sure you butt your next drywall boards bevel to bevel whenever possible.

Now that you have the cut-outs for your drywall board in place, it is time to hang the drywall board. Use your caulking gun to line all the ceiling joists with adhesive where the board will be plalced. If you have a drywall lift, place the board on it and lift it into place. The lift will hold it there so you can start securing it with drywall screws. If you don't have a lift, I recommend having a helper to do the ceiling. A nifty little device that you can make is a "T" out of 2×4's. Make the top part of the "T" about 4 feet long, the width of the drywall board. The length should long enough for someone to stand the "T" upright from the floor to the drywall board at the ceiling You can make two or three "T''s" to help support the drywall board while you start fastening it with drywall screws. Fasten the board on all ceiling joists with drywall screws using your cordless drill. Make sure you fasten the drywall board around the perimeter of the ceiling either to the ceiling joists or nailers that you installed. I usually install my drywall screws about 6 inches apart on the length of the joist. Repeat this process until you have the whole ceiling done.

Before we start the walls, let's talk about cutting a piece of drywall to length. Suppose that you need to cut your
8 foot drywall to 7 feet. Mark the front of the board at 7 feet.Use your drywall square to draw a straight line. Now take your utility knife and score the line that was drawn. I like to get about halfway through the board with my score. Next bend the board away from the score. This will leave the paper on the back of the drywall board to cut through. Go to the back of the board and cut through the paper. Your cut is complete.

When hanging the walls, you want to start at the ceiling and work your way down. You also want to hang the drywall horizontally. This will give you a beveled edge that butts up against the ceiling and the next piece of drywall that is placed under it. Remember to use the longest piece that you can to create the least amount of seams. Also make sure that you butt the drywall as tight as you can to the drywall on the ceiling. Use your caulking gun to place some adhesive on the studs. This is not necessary but it helps hold the board in place. If your board is not long enough to cover the enitre length of the wall, make sure the end of the drywall board on the continuation side ends in the middle of a stud. Secure the ends of the board while your helper holds it in place. Once the board is secure and won't move, insert drywall screws about six inches apart over all the studs that are covered. Cut-outs for electrical boxes are done similiar to the ceiling. For example, lets take a 2×4 receptacle box. We need to measure the height of the box (top and bottom)from the floor and the width (both sides) from the corner where the board will start. Mark the measurements on the drywall board. Use your drywall square to draw straight lines until they intersect and make the outline of the box. Use your drywall saw and cut out the box so when you hang the board it will line up with the receptacle box. Repeat this process untill all the walls are covered. You ae now ready for spackle and tape but that's another lesson and this is about cordless drill projects. I hope that this article gives you some insight and helpful hints to help you hang drywall and effectively make use of your cordless drill. Hand Water Pumps by Simple Pump: Three Forms of Power in One Device

Emergency preparedness and self-sufficient living cross paths through hand water pumps. While well pumps like these lessen your dependence on traditional water sources, they provide a solution to providing you and your family with water in droughts and power outages. Although many well pumps are motorized for convenience, hand water pumps are used as a backup in case of a loss of power. A hand pump, however, can become motorized through the addition of a motor and a solar panel. This way, you have a single device to pump water with hand pump and solar power or battery-activated motor.

18 Volt Batteries

Hand water pumps, such as those by Simple Pump, can bring water up from 350 feet below ground, although most use it for depths of 100 feet. When used as a backup or by itself, the manual pump can be installed into four to eight-inch wells. The pump can be operated when sharing the same well with an electric submersible pump, bringing up five gallons of water per minute.

18 Volt Batteries

Hand water pumps use a pump rod design. For Simple Pumps, this requires eight pounds of pressure to be applied to a 24-inch handle. Longer handles need less pressure for bringing up water.

Manually pumping water up from an aquifer every day can be exhausting, however. A family, for example, needs at least 250 gallons per day. Some may even use up to 1000 gallons per day. To calculate this, a manual water pump brings up five gallons of water per minute and, if an individual works constantly, 300 per hour. At this rate, a person would need to pump regularly without stopping for nearly three and a half hours to bring up 1000 gallons. Although not a bad workout, it becomes tiring and time-consuming when done daily.

As a solution, a hand water pump can be motorized. A 105ME/GM 12 volt DC 60 rpm 1/5 hp bolt-on motor extension can be added to a manual well pump from Simple Pump. This particular motor can use two forms of power: a battery with 200 amp-hours and a 130-watt solar panel.

Installing a Solar Panel Aboard Your Boat

Following a recent five-day trip aboard our trawler where we had to frequently start up the genset to provide electricity to the 115 volt AC freezer to maintain temperatures, I began to mull over options. We put in an excess of ninety hours on the vessel generator in only five days; time for another oil change! I put in an inverter soon thereafter and that improved the run time for the generator drastically, but there was still work to be completed. I nonetheless needed to keep the batteries fully charged to operate the inverter. Then it occurred to me, why not explore solar panels for use aboard our yacht. Solar panels have been successfully utilized since the mid 1950s, originally utilized in manned space exploration. They have been dropping in cost since roughly 2004 when their popularity really went up. And now with the Green pressure going on, solar panels are as accepted as ever. So I commenced to delve into them and find out how to purchase and mount one; I was in for a big surprise. You can come across many retail vendors over the internet that will sell you a solar panel but nowhere could I locate a detailed description of how to determine what to buy and how to install it; much less on board a yacht. So this piece was written as I made my way through the progression; therefore is a truly a learn-as-you-go article.

18 Volt Batteries

What Exactly is a Solar Panel and How Do They Work?

18 Volt Batteries

Solar panels are basically any panel that makes use of the sun's thermal energy to create electricity. A solar panel can be described as a photovoltaic panel, the name used in the business, for panels intended to create electrical energy from the emission of the sun. Despite the group of solar panel being discussed, nearly all solar panels are flat. This is because the surface of the panel needs to be at a 90 degree incline from the sun's rays for the best angle to soak up the sun's rays. Solar panels are able to absorb energy from the sun through a collection of solar cells on their surface. Very similar to how a plant is able to take in energy from the sun for photosynthesis, solar cells function in a comparable way. As the sun's rays hit the solar cells on a photovoltaic panel, the energy is transferred to a silicon semiconductor. The power is then changed into (dc) direct current electrical energy and then passed through connecting wires to ultimately enter a storage battery.

Kinds of Solar Panels

Types of panels most normally used in yachting uses have either multicrystalline or amorphous thin-film cells. Multicrystalline panels are the oldest technology obtainable and in addition the strongest. When sized correctly and paired with suitable batteries, these are the panels to make use of for operating large loads such as refrigeration.

Amorphous thin film solar panels are only about 50% as effective as multicrystalline panels, but can be bought in flexible varieties so they can roll or fold, or change to the shape of a boat cabin top or bimini. They don't often have adequate yield for considerable energy replenishment, but can be used to lightly charge a battery bank.

How Much Power Can Solar Cells Make?

Normally, we measure solar panels by wattage and that is how we buy them. You can get solar panels for boats as small as 10 watts to as great as 200 watts or even larger. But it is simpler to understand when we change watts to amperage. We calculate these values by multiplying the number of hours the panel is in full sun (usually defined as 5 a day in Florida) by the panel's wattage. For a 195 watt solar panel the amount produced would be 195 x 5 hrs = 975 watts/day. We can then figure, 975 watts/12 volts = 81.25 amps per day.

Power Consumption

Before considering which size panel to purchase for your boat, you will need to complete an energy budget to ascertain what sources of power consumption you have aboard while at anchor. I use the at anchor scenario as this is the place you will use the most energy; under power and your trawler can supply its needs without any issues.

Example, if you have 3 inside lights that pull 2 amps each and you keep them on for 4 hours per night, your consumption would be 3 x 2 x 4 = 24 AH/Day. We are not concerned by running lights and electronics as they will not likely be running while at anchor.

Inverter Loads

Inverter loads also make use of DC power but they are powering AC appliances and equipment. If you want to change watts to amps use (12watts/12 volts = 1amp).

Solar Energy Creation

Different sources of power similar to solar panels can replace the amp/hrs pulled from the batteries. But similar to the power budget that determined your usage you will also need to compute your re-supply of amp hours. Keep in mind the formula - (12 watts/12 volts = 1 amp). But be mindful, the formula is only a gauge; complete accuracy can only be where the panel production is constant and a solar panel might at times function ineffectually due to cloudy skies. Compare the day by day power use in AH/Day to the solar power creation. Your solar energy production must be larger than the use. If it is not, pick a bigger wattage panel and recalculate. Always purchase more solar panel output than you think you will need; some professionals recommend at least 30% in excess.

Case in point - 100 watt solar panel/ 12 volts = 8.3 amp x 5 hours = 41.66 AH/Day production

Installing Your Solar Panel

Now that you have got your solar panel, where do you put it on board your yacht? As we mentioned before, installing the panel ninety degrees to the sun is best. You will get the best power production this way. But on yachts, finding a fitting spot is tricky at best. A number of boaters put them on brackets placed on the rails, others position them on top of the bimini, and I have seen them positioned on the trawler dingy stanchions. But wherever you decide to mount them, bear in mind that to get the most out of them they ought to be in the open, away from any shading from booms, vessel radar arches, or cabin structures. Bear in mind that while at anchor, the boat will turn to the sun twice daily because of the tides. I opted to mount our panel on the top of the boat back deck hardtop in a horizontal position. Here it will get the greatest view of the sun and be clear from the radar arch shade as the boat swings at anchor. The slope toward the sun is not precisely at ninety degrees but it will have to do. I selected a 195 watt panel so I get almost a 50% reserve ability in my panel to compensate for the small inefficiency of the sun's angle. We got the panel from Sun Electronics in Miami, sunelec.com as they had the best prices I could find anywhere on the web. But bear in mind, panels must be shipped using freight as they are heavily packed to reduce the chance of damage so be sure to calculate those expenses in your acquisition.

What is the best way to attach the panel to your vessel?

There are a variety of manufacturers of solar panel mounting rails and supports but almost all of them are made for roof or ground mounting. West Marine does carry a product for mounting small panels to the rails. A good number of boaters make their own mounts. I found a mount developed by Sunsei known as a Sunsei Glue Mounting Kit that is attached to the vessel and panel using 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive. The mount allows the panel to be installed with about 2 inches of space beneath the panel for aeration. I did not need to drill any holes in the hardtop either. You can locate these mounts at amazon.com.

Wiring Your Panel

Marine electrical wiring is incredibly specialized and hazardous; if you are not comfortable in performing this part of the task, please check with an experienced marine electrician. Your panel will be prewired for attaching to your vessel but you will need to provide the connecting cables that will also be sold by your panel provider; they are known as MC4 cables. The cables will be made in different lengths appropriate for your needs with a male and female connector affixed; you cut one connector off.

In addition, you will also require a controller. The controller regulates the power stream from the panel to your batteries keeping your batteries charged yet stopping over charging. A number of controllers are easy but others have LED displays indicating the amount of charge etc. The more fancy features the more costly it will be. Your panel dealer will be able to suggest a controller that will satisfy your needs. I chose a controller developed by Specialty Concepts. It is straightforward but does the job. And the people at the company are a big help in aiding you to select the best model for your panel. When you get in touch with them, they will want to understand which size panel (wattage) you own and what the voltage is. Check them out at specialtyconcepts.com. I also got my controller from the individuals at Sun Electronics in Miami.

The individuals at Specialty Concepts have also calculated how heat will have an effect on current flow and suggest that their controllers not be placed in engine rooms as the heat produced will diminish the controller effectiveness by roughly 25%. I put mine in the electrical panel under the lower helm. And finally, you will require the correctly sized cables to go from the controller to your batteries and a fuse to connect the controller to the battery bank. In deciding on the correct fuse, you need to locate the short circuit current for your panel and rate the breaker at 125% of that number. This will give you the amperage of the breaker you will need. Your controller operating manual will have information on these too.

Owning a solar panel to preserve your batteries would seem like a great plan but you'll want to have a way to keep an eye on your batteries. I opted to also install a Trimetric 2025RV Battery Monitor; bogartengineering.com. This smart device is wired into your battery bank to provide a genuine measurement of voltage going in to the bank, amps being used by your yacht, the percent full charge on the bank, and the amp hours utilized from the last charge.

Panel Functionality

So we have now installed a 195 watt solar panel in addition to an 1800 watt inverter and a battery bank with 443 amp hours. We ran our tests this week on the hook with clear skies. I concluded that our energy consumption is 112.5 amp hours per day. The freezer is the major draw using 60 of the amp hours followed by the refrigerator. Did you know that a standard anchor light pulls 18 amp hours each night? I think I'll check out LED bulbs now.

The battery monitor indicated that our actual draw from the battery bank was merely 65 amp hours which indicates we received the remaining from the sunlight, an entire 42% was from the sun. Now we will turn on the genset for around an hour to bring the battery bank up to complete charge.
