The biggest challenge, when you set out to find these materials, will be in acquiring the solar cell. They might not have them at the store so I recommend that you shop on eBay for blemished and factory-second solar cells. Look for 36 pieces of 3x6 inch mono-crystalline solar cells that give a total of 18 volts. This should be good enough for charging 12-volt batteries.
Once these have been acquired there is one crucial step that you need to take in order to build a reliable system.
